Sri Lanka Cancer Society - Life is for Living
I recently attended a very heartwarming speech by a lady from the Cancer Society. They have launched (a very successful campaign I must say) a campaign to sell bands (shown in the photo) where the proceedings go to the Society. Our school alone sold over 1300 bands and raised over 100,000SLR.
Here are some interesting facts from the Life is for living page and website:
- According to the World Health Organization: Worldwide, the 5 most common types of cancer that kill men are (in order of frequency): lung, stomach, liver, colorectal and oesophagus. The 5 most common types of cancer that kill women are (in the order of frequency): breast, lung, stomach, colorectal and cervical.
- An estimated 80 million people have health insurance insufficient to cover the costs of a catastrophic illness such as cancer.
- According to the World Health Organization a third of cancers could be cured if detected early and treated adequately.
